There is a way of compiling PCNTL as an extension and linking it in to an existing PHP build, but it's a bit in-depth. I understand this hack is no longer necessary in MAMP 3 which offers better PHP version management. ![]() ![]() You’ll be pleased to see that you can now choose the PHP version you actually want to use: Note: When upgrading from MAMP PRO 4 to MAMP PRO 5 or 6, you will be prompted to upgrade your MySQL data to version 5.7. Go to System Preferences > Users & Groups to confirm. A user account that belongs to the Admin group. Now restart MAMP and see your handy work in action. A working MAMP installation (MAMP can be downloaded directly from the MAMP PRO installation package). I’m renaming my oldest version and my newest version so that I’m left with PHP 5.3.27 and PHP 5.4.19: This is the folder that houses all your PHP versions. That’s all good if I actually needed either version – but sadly 5.2.x is too old for me, and 5.5.x doesn’t quite work and is a bit too cutting edge. MAMP is a free, local server environment that installs in a few clicks on MacOS and Windows. The available PHP versions depend on the version of MAMP you have. When I switch to the other version MAMP restarts and I can refresh my browser to see my project running on the other PHP version. PHP Version Here you can choose between two PHP versions. Here I’m using MAMP 2.2 (even though 3.x has been released already) and I have PHP 5.2.17 and PHP 5.5.3. If you’re using MAMP that’s fairly easy to do: head over to the MAMP Start Screen, select Preferences and see two versions to choose from. You can check that it has worked by running the following command and the version is shown at the very top of the page.Sometimes you need to test your projects against multiple versions of PHP. Now MAMP will offer you two versions of PHP: 7.4.33 and 8.1.13. I wouldn’t recommend removing the folder completely as you may wish to come back to it in future. Go to this location and rename the php8.2.0 folder (I just added a hypen at the beginning) and then restart MAMP. The versions of PHP that are available to you are held (on a Mac) in: /Applications/MAMP/bin/php Windows Development Tools MAMP MAMP for Windows 4.2.0 Download Free web development utility 1/3 MAMP is a local server environment that is free to use. By default MAMP shows you the latest version for the last two releases that it is shipped with which is currently 7.4.33 and 8.2.0. ![]() It turns out that changing the versions available to you in the MAMP free edition is pretty straight forward. Changing the PHP Versions in MAMP Free Edition ![]() I could have upgraded to MAMP Pro but £90 just to switch to PHP 8.1 seemed a bit much, although, I do appreciate that by doing so I would be supporting the developers. I recently upgraded and found that the free version offers two versions of PHP: 7.4.33 and 8.2.0 which would be fine but my production server is still on 8.1 and so I needed to match that. When doing any development on my laptop I use the very useful MAMP to give me an xAMP (Apache, MySQL & PHP) environment.
